Healing Aromatherapy Massage Oils
From the time we are conceived and grow in the womb, we are touched and embraced by our mother. Once infants are born, they are soothed by their mother’s touch, smell and the sound of her heartbeat and voice.
Deep in the amygdala and the hippocampus (primitive) part of the brain, touch and smell are powerful calming and restorative triggers. This part of the brain handles memory and emotion at a deep subconscious level. Of all the sense’s fragrance has the most profound effects on moods and studies have shown that specific aromas trigger a relaxed muscle effect.
Touch alone is powerful and underutilized in modern medicine. When a mother gently strokes her baby’s forehead, the usual response is for the child to relax, close their eyes and slip towards slumber.
Think about the times you have gone to have your hair cut. When conditioner is placed in your hair, you unconsciously breathe in the aroma and relax as those magical fingers move and stroke your scalp and hair and it is one of those moments that makes going to the hairdresser a pleasure. Powerful secretions of dopamine are released into the body; the same hormone is secreted when you fall in love. The result is happiness, relaxation, and joy.
Aromatherapy is a mixture of usually three synergistic oils that can promote a number of emotional responses.
Lemon improves concentration, it clarifies the mind and is helpful when you are feeling angry, anxious or run down.
Lavender, Chamomile, Bergamot, Jasmine, Rose and Sandalwood oils help to foster relaxation and sleep; they also help to relieve anxiety from a troubling day, or if you are bullied at work, or a school. Dab oil on your wrists and take a few deep breaths, or scented candles will also do the same job.
Rosemary The Northumbria University, did a study and found that rosemary oil can help boost memory. A student who used rosemary as an essential oil in this study achieved between 5 to 7% better results in memory tests.
Cinnamon As an essential oil will help to uplift your mood by alleviating depression; it increases circulation, it can be used as an astringent, an antiseptic, and is an antioxidant. Mix five drops of cinnamon into a teaspoon of mustard oil to relieve arthritis pain in a joint.
As an edible herb, cinnamon is perfect for your heart, it lowers blood sugar and has a plethora of other health benefits (Ceylon is recommended, only use Cassia cinnamon in small doses).
Peppermint as an aromatic tea works to reduce stress and relieve anxiety. Peppermint tea will soothe morning sickness or an upset stomach, 2 to 3 cups a day is fine, but later in the pregnancy peppermint may worsen heartburn. Listen to your body if this happens and give the mint a rest.
Aromatherapy in combination with massage
Aromatherapy massage is not like a deep tissue massage or remedial massage meant to dig out striations or knots in the muscle fibres. It is, however, amazingly effective in achieving the same results without the pain.
Essential oils with restorative properties will relax and heal mind body and soul.
Muscle spasms, stiffness, depression, insomnia, asthma, congestion and hypertension are all but a small sampling of health problems that can be helped with gentle massage and aromatherapy.
The physical act of massage alone will reduce muscle tension, improve your circulation, reduce the production of stress hormones. With all of this movement and circulation, the lymphatic system is also stimulated to assist the flow of lymph throughout the body. The lymphatic system supports the immune system to prevent disease in the body and aid in reducing oedema. (Swelling, or fluid build-up in the tissues which is very bad for the heart)
It has a positive effect on the skin, promotes vitality and helps with respiratory disorders. The list of health benefits of massage goes on, but the importance of lymphatic drainage cannot be understated.
Most people have very little understanding of the purpose of the lymphatic system in that it is like a sewer system; it must occasionally be purged. Most cancers are detected first in the lymph nodes before it is detected in other body structures, for example, breast cancer and skin cancers all require a lymph node biopsy to determine cancer as being positive in the body.
So don’t think that this is a luxury and don’t feel guilty about having an aroma massage because if you live a stressful life you need this for your health. Aroma massage for your happiness and for your poor tired, overworked muscles. You deserve it.
If you are single and do not have a partner that can rub your tired sore neck and back, then it is even more important for you. Humans are creatures of the five senses: touch, taste, see, hear and most especially smell. Your mental health requires the stimulation of smell so please do not neglect this.
If you have a teenager who is driving you crazy with mood swings, make some aromatic candles a must do on your shopping list. It will do nothing to solve their problems, but it will help them to cope and to sleep at night which is very important. Without those 8 hours of rest your teenager is a walking time-bomb just waiting to explode.
Perhaps at your next party you could organise a massage train with fragrant oils and share the gift of touch and aromatherapy.
